WHAT ARE MUSCLE ACHES AND PAINS?

Muscle aches (also referred to as myalgia) are extremely common and you’ve probably experienced discomfort at some point in your life.

This type of pain can be felt almost anywhere as there is muscle tissue in nearly all parts of the body. However, there’s no single cause for muscle aches and pains.

While overuse or injury is common, there are other possible explanations for ongoing discomfort.

Did you know? The most common cause of back pain is tight or weak muscles that put extra strain on your spine

COMMON CAUSES OF MUSCLE PAIN

Two of the most common causes of muscle pain are injury (at work or play) and muscle tension. We call these musculoskeletal muscle pains, and we commonly help with these in clinic.

If you were doing some type of physical activity and then felt muscle pain, it is probably due to overuse, excess pressure or a quick turn the wrong way, resulting in injury.

Ouch.

Poor posture, heaving lifting or sitting down for long periods throughout the day (such as working in an office), may lead to muscle tightness and tension, resulting in pain and discomfort.

WHAT IS MUSCLE TENSION?

You may be wondering just what muscle tension is? Chiropractors commonly refer to tense muscles and muscle tension when assessing your spine.

It basically refers to the condition in which some of your muscles remain semi-contracted for extended periods of time.

Think about all the times you sit hunched over your phone, looking down at a laptop or slouched on the couch. These may all lead to the semi-contraction of certain muscles, such as the delicate muscles around your neck, or lower back. Muscle tension may also be caused by the physiological effects of stress and can lead to muscle pain.

Some other causes of muscle pain may include fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, autoimmune disorders and other diseases. We aren’t discussing these today.

CORE MUSCLE GROUPS

Your spine and pelvis are the structural foundation of your body and your core muscles are all the muscles that attach to them. This includes:

  • Paraspinal muscles
  • Oblique muscles
  • Rectus abdominis
  • Transverse abdominis
  • Quadracepts
  • Gluteal muscles
  • Hamstrings

Any tightness or tension in these muscles are more likely to upset your spine and posture, although you can get muscle tightness in any muscle.

MUSCLE PAIN SYMPTOMS

Apart from the obvious feeling of pain, there are several other symptoms of muscle pain:

  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Referred pain – an injury in one area may lead to pain in another

EASING MUSCLE PAINS AT HOME

There are several things you can do to help muscle aches at home. These include:

  • Resting the area of the body where you’re experiencing aches and pains
  • Applying ice to the affected area to help relieve pain any reduce inflammation
  • Stop the activity that is contributing to your pain

If your pain persists, please check in with your local health practitioner for an assessment. There may be an underlying cause that needs to be addressed.
