CHIROPRACTORS HELP WITH HIP PAIN

Did you know that hip pain is a very common problem? Here at The Back Clinic many practice members benefit from chiropractic care for their hip pain concerns. Please read on to learn more about hip pain and how we may be able to help.

WHAT IS HIP PAIN?

Pain in the hip is very common. Hip pain affects both children and adults and can vary in causes. As the hips are used in nearly every way we move (when we sit, when we stand, to walk, run etc), pain in this area may impact our ability to carry out everyday tasks. Severe hip pain may lead to a reduction in quality of life and may contribute to other health problems.

DIFFERENT CAUSES OF HIP PAIN

The type of pain you experience will depend on the cause of your hip pain. If you feel pain inside your hip or groin, the problem may be within the hip itself. If your pain is outside your hip, such as around your upper thigh or buttock, the cause may be associated with muscles, ligaments or tendons around the hip.

If you don’t really know where the pain is coming from, or if your hip pain has been present for over three months, please feel free to consult with a chiropractor here at The Back Clinic (or see you local GP or manual therapist).

SYMPTOMS OF HIP PAIN

Common symptoms of hip pain may include pain from within the hip joint but also pain in your:

  • Pelvic region
  • Buttock
  • Lower back
  • Thigh, groin or knee

WHAT IS REFERRED PAIN?

Sometimes pain from other areas can be felt in your hip – this is called ‘referred pain’.

It is not uncommon for patients to describe what they feel as “hip pain” to actually be derived, or referred, from a different part of the body.

Sciatica (nerve pain) is one common example of referred pain. Sciatica (inflammation or irritation of the long sciatic nerve) may be caused by disc herniation, spinal degeneration, poor-posture or Piriformis syndrome. Sciatic pain is not only felt in the hip, but also may be felt in the lower back, buttocks, hips, as well as radiating down the leg.

Another example of hip pain can include dysfunction of the sacroiliac joints, or the joints that connect the sacrum to the iliac bones. This may result in feelings of hip pain. A hernia (a weakening or tear in the abdominal wall) may also cause pain around the hip.

ACTIVITIES THAT MAY EXACERBATE HIP PAIN

Certain activities (especially those that rely on movement in the hips) may exacerbate hip pain:

  • Walking up or down stairs
  • Sitting or standing for some time
  • Exercise or playing sports
  • Lifting or moving heavy items

HOW MAY CHIROPRACTORS HELP HIP PAIN?

If your health practitioner can identify the cause of your hip pain, they may recommend appropriate treatment options.

For instance, if your hip pain is caused by postural imbalances, chiropractors may be able to help. We provide a full examination and will check how you stand, walk and what movements cause pain. Hip pain solutions often aim to reduce inflammation, relax muscle spasms, build strength in weak muscles and improve joint mobility.

If chiropractic is appropriate in your case, you will receive a plan that may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Exercise therapy
  • Posture tips
  • Stretching advice
  • Massage and/or coordination with other health practitioners
