Chiropractors Help With Hip Pain
Did you know that hip pain is a very common problem? Here at The Back Clinic many practice members benefit from chiropractic care for their hip pain concerns. Please read on to learn more about hip pain and how we may be able to help.
What is Hip Pain?
Pain in the hip is very common. Hip pain affects both children and adults and can vary in causes. As the hips are used in nearly every way we move (when we sit, when we stand, to walk, run etc), pain in this area may impact our ability to carry out everyday tasks. Severe hip pain may lead to a reduction in quality of life and may contribute to other health problems.
Different Causes of Hip Pain
The type of pain you experience will depend on the cause of your hip pain. If you feel pain inside your hip or groin, the problem may be within the hip itself. If your pain is outside your hip, such as around your upper thigh or buttock, the cause may be associated with muscles, ligaments or tendons around the hip.
If you don’t really know where the pain is coming from, or if your hip pain has been present for over three months, please feel free to consult with a chiropractor here at The Back Clinic (or see you local GP or manual therapist).
Symptoms of Hip Pain
Hip pain may present in different ways, depending on the underlying cause. While discomfort may originate from within the hip joint itself, it’s also common to feel pain in surrounding areas such as:
- The pelvic region
- The buttocks
- The lower back
- The thigh, groin, or knee
If your symptoms are ongoing or unclear, a professional assessment can help identify the source of your discomfort.
Is it referred pain or hip pain?
Referred pain is when discomfort felt in one area of the body actually originates from another. It’s not uncommon for people to describe hip pain that is, in fact, referred from another region, such as the lower back or pelvis.
Sciatica is a common example. It occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated, often due to disc herniation, spinal degeneration, poor posture, or piriformis syndrome. Sciatic pain can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and may travel down the leg.
Other sources of referred hip pain may include:
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction – affecting the joints between the sacrum and pelvis
- Abdominal hernias – where weakening or tearing in the abdominal wall causes pain near the hip
Identifying whether your pain is local or referred is an important step in guiding the right treatment.
Activities that may exacerbate hip pain
Certain activities (especially those that rely on movement in the hips) may exacerbate hip pain:
- Walking up or down stairs
- Sitting or standing for some time
- Exercise or playing sports
- Lifting or moving heavy items
Understanding which movements trigger your symptoms can help guide treatment and management strategies.
How Chiropractors May Help with Hip Pain
If the cause of your hip pain is musculoskeletal, such as joint restriction, postural imbalance, or soft tissue tension, a chiropractor may be able to assist.
At The Back Clinic, your chiropractor will conduct a thorough assessment, including observing how you stand, walk, and which movements cause discomfort. If appropriate, a tailored care plan may be offered, which could include:
Where necessary, we may work alongside or refer you to other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care.
