What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling, also known as myofascial trigger point dry needling, is the use of acupuncture needles for muscle pain therapy. Dry needling can be used to treat myofascial pain dysfunction, a chronic pain disorder where pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) cause pain in other parts of your body (referred pain).
The aim of dry needling is to specifically target and restore muscle function, providing you with relief from pain and improved tissue healing.
Dry needling involves the insertion of a thin needle into a painful ‘trigger point’ or muscle needing release. This action may cause your muscle to ‘twitch’ when stimulated by the needle.
Is Dry Needling Different to Acupuncture?
The main difference between dry needling and acupuncture lies in the distinction between their application and their respective traditions i.e. dry needling is based on western medicine and the western anatomical approach whereas acupuncture is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to health.
Acupuncture aims to unblock energy meridians and help create balance within your body. Dry needling aims to reduce pain arising from muscle tension and tightness in a more localised application.
