WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

Carpal tunnel syndrome refers to irritation and pain around the ‘carpal tunnel’, within the wrist. Specifically, the tunnel is a ligament passage through which tendons, blood vessels and nerves pass. Your median nerve, which controls sensation and movement in the thumb and first fingers, runs through this passage.

Issues may arise in and around your carpal tunnel as a result of poor ergonomics, injury, repetitive strain or overuse.

SYMPTOMS OF CARPAL TUNNEL SYDROME

Common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may include:

  • pain
  • numbness
  • tingling
  • ‘pins and needle’ sensation
  • weakness in thumb and first two fingers over time

CAN CHIROPRACTIC TREAT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

Not all wrist pain is directly related to carpal tunnel syndrome. Other symptoms may be the result of interference to the nerve system. A thorough check-up by a chiropractor may determine whether your wrist pain is due to carpal tunnel syndrome or another musculoskeletal condition.Without any form of treatment, the condition may worsen and symptoms may become constant. Radiating pain up to the shoulder, tight muscles and even atrophy (muscle wasting) around the thumb can be common in severe cases.

Treatment options may include:

  • manual therapy (such as chiropractic, yoga or acupuncture)
  • anti-inflammatory drugs
  • surgery

DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?

No. In Australia chiropractors are five year trained primary healthcare practitioners. You do not need a referral from a GP. Chiropractors and other manual therapists may help incases of carpal tunnel syndrome.
