FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HOW CHIROPRACTORS HELP WITH MUSCLE STRAIN
Muscle strains are a type of injury that occurs when the muscle is overstretched or torn. Muscle strains can be caused by overuse or by sudden, unexpected movements.
Some common causes of muscle strain include:
- Repetitive movements such as running, walking, or typing on a computer keyboard for long periods of time
- Lifting heavy objects
- Doing any activity that requires you to put your muscles in an awkward position for a long period of time
- Sports and other physical activities such as weightlifting, cross fit, and yoga.
WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON MUSCLE STRAIN?
The most common types of muscle strain are:
- Muscle pull – a tear in a muscle or tendon that can be caused by overuse, repetitive actions, or sudden movements.
- Muscle sprain – a stretched or torn ligament in the muscle.
- Muscle cramp – a sudden, painful contraction of the muscle.
- Muscle tear – damage to the muscles and supporting tissues that can be caused by overuse, repetitive actions, or sudden movements.
LOWER BACK MUSCLE STRAIN
Lower back muscle strain is often caused by lifting heavy objects, bending or twisting at the waist, or incorrect posture while sitting.
The pain associated with lower back muscle strain can be severe and in many cases, can come back time and again.
Chiropractors are most known for helping in cases of lower back pain and back strain.
NECK MUSCLE STRAIN
Neck muscle strain is a condition that occurs when the muscles in the neck are strained or overworked. This causes pain and discomfort in the neck, back, and shoulders.
The most common causes of neck muscle strain are:
- Sitting for long periods of time without taking breaks to stretch or walk around.
- Roughly turning the head to one side
- Poor posture while standing or sitting
- Carrying heavy loads on one shoulder.
Chiropractors commonly help in cases of neck pain and strain, and we provide thorough posture assessments to determine the cause of your muscle strain, so that we can correct it.
SHOULDER MUSCLE STRAIN
A shoulder sprain or strain is a tear in the shoulder ligaments (sprain) or muscles (strain). There are many moving parts which include the scapula/shoulder blade, acromion, clavicle/collarbone and sternum/breastbone. Poor posture habits, such as forward head posture, rounding posture and humpback/kyphosis, can contribute to shoulder strains.
Chiropractors may be able to identify the cause of your shoulder strain and recommend appropriate treatment.
INTERCOSTAL MUSCLE STRAIN
Intercostal muscle strain, or a strain between your ribs, can often be a painful type of strain.
It is caused by overuse or strain of the intercostal muscles, which are located in the rib cage.
Some possible causes include:
- Injuries from a car accident or other trauma
- Repetitive motions such as lifting heavy objects
- Muscle fatigue from sports activities such as running, swimming, and biking
Chiropractors can assess your posture to determine if your rib cage or spine are shifted away from a natural, neutral posture. If so, we can provide treatment to help correct this misalignment and address your intercostal muscle strain.
PSOAS MUSCLE STRAIN
The psoas muscle is one of the most important muscles in the body because it plays a major role in everyday activities such as walking, running, and sitting. This muscle lies deep within the pelvis on either side of the spine. It attaches to the lumbar spine (lower back) and extends to just below the navel. The psoas muscle assists with flexing and rotating your thigh inward, while also helping you bend at your hips.
Strains to the muscle are commonly caused by postural imbalances that result in the muscle being overused, stretched and strained.
Many cases of lower back pain can be attributed to psoas muscle overuse and the pulling of the psoas muscle on the lumbar spine.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A MUSCLE STRAIN?
The symptoms of a muscle strain can vary from person to person and may include:
- Pain that worsens with movement
- Tightness in the affected area
- Limited range of motion
- Tenderness to the touch
- Swelling
- Weakness.
HOW LONG DO MUSCLE STRAINS TAKE TO HEAL?
It is important to know how long it takes for a muscle strain to heal so that you can get back in the game as soon as possible.
For some people, it may take up to four weeks before they are able to play again, while others could be back within two weeks.
The severity of your injury will determine how long it takes for your muscle strain to heal. The more severe your injury is, the longer it will take for your muscle strain.
Our team of expert health practitioners will be able to provide you with a thorough diagnosis and appropriate treatment to help you recover and feel better.
DO CHIROPRACTORS HELP MUSCLE INJURIES?
Chiropractic may help in many cases of muscle strains and sporting injury. Chiropractic focuses on the management, rehabilitation and optimal performance of the neuromusculoskeletal system. By removing interference to the nervous system, relaxing muscles and assisting in maintaining a neutral spinal alignment, your body can perform better at your favourite sport or activity.
If your posture is off, and causing additional strain or muscular pain, we can also assess this and propose a treatment plan that aims to correct your posture concern, which also helps to reduce muscular strain and tension.
We provide:
- chiropractic adjustments
- soft tissue therapy
- dry needling
- exercise therapy
- postural assessments and more.
Our combined approach to treatment helps provide for better health outcomes, meaning you can feel good again.
CAN AN ADJUSTMENT HELP A PULLED MUSCLE?
Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapy increases blood flow to the affected area, helping to relieve pain while promoting healing. By specifically addressing your musculoskeletal system, and by aligning the joints and improving biomechanics, a chiropractic adjustment promotes mobility and expedites the natural healing process of your body.
